In September 2006 I created in Luxembourg, where I live, a non-profit organisation called SCHEMA. SCHEMA stands for "Schemi an Ëmwelt Atelier". As I was only paid part-time in Geneva (12.5% of a full time position, zero now that I am officially retired and cannot enjoy an emeritus position, even if I work 7 days a week), my idea was to be able to develop funded research in environmental chemistry in Luxembourg. Time proved that this was a (stupid?) dream and it has only been possible to participate in science outreach activities under this umbrella.
For some time, I used SCHEMA as an affiliation in articles because the work described had been developed mostly "at home" and without any financial support from "my university". On the other hand, "my university" (the University of Geneva) has always generously provided my main affiliation and, with it, the possibility to "exist" in science. I am very grateful to the people who, over the years, have made this possible. At the same time, I have remained an atypical scientist (an outlier?), but this is my personal responsibility.
However, this double affiliation has also created some confusion for people who often ask me "where are you now?" and/or assume that I am earning a lot of money in Luxembourg... That is why I add this explanation to my research website.
I maintain my research website on SCHEMA because I continue to work "at home", and because I adapt poorly to the constraints of the official website in Geneva
